Making Strides

This year, more than 250,000 women and men will hear the words, “You have breast cancer." Each year in October, in hundreds of cities around the country, the American Cancer Society puts on the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk to celebrate our survivors, honor those who lost their battle with cancer, raise money for breast cancer research and raise awareness about early detection. Last year, the walks raised over $60 million.

In 2005, I walked with Drew's family to celebrate Drew's mom being officially cancer free since April of that year. It was hard on her as she was still recovering, and Drew carried her across the finish line on his back. It was amazing. We have walked every year since and it has been a fun way to realize how far she has come. Last year we all ran the entire 5k and she's one of the healthiest, most active women I know. This Saturday we are walking for our fifth time and we are celebrating a big milestone - five years of being cancer free! What an incredible journey and milestone, and we'll all be there along with her closest friends sporting our Team Clark shirts to show our support.

“Making Strides Against Breast Cancer gives us the chance to celebrate those who have survived breast cancer and help ensure that future generations are not faced with this life-threatening disease. Making Strides truly demonstrates that hope starts with each and every one of us.” Moira Renke, special events director for the American Cancer Society.

What a great cause to be involved in. This year Gainesville has raised almost $100,000 and hopefully by Saturday we'll get there.
